Howdy. Well that’s an entirely different topic because you’re serving for a different type of use and many more users. I think there’s plenty of existing test data out there for production scenarios. I’m trying to fill a void for this specific development scenario.

For SMEs specifically, cost tends to preclude many options out of hand. As a starting point I would eliminate anything clearly outside of budget and then look for the best solution with the available funds. Often, it’s more an issue of integrating in to wider virtualisation plans than using a SharePoint installation as a starting point for a virtual infrastructure roll-out. Hope this helps.

Yeah, agreed that for many people, Windows 7 is a huge plus. I’m not so fussed, but the graphics issues can be an enormous pain sometimes. I tested with 5GB in the guest VM on both Hyper-V and VMWare. More detail on all of this in the next next couple of posts. Cheers!

Probably the best thing for me about using VMWare Workstation is that I can still run my companies Windows 7 SOE.

I can’t recall any performance issues (other than running too many VMs) and I’m using VMWare 6.5 (haven’t tried 7 yet), but you obviously want at least 4GB for the beast that is your SP2010 VM.

Great post, look forward to the next one. We use Hyper-V / R2 internally for Dev and have just bumped RAM up in an effort to alleviate some of the performance issues encountered with 2010 Dev. Disks are next on our agenda for attention… though on laptops we’re looking at VMWare Workstation for the same reasons you’ve mentioned.
